November 7th Indy Southside Beekeepers Club Meeting starts at 6:30......

Vickie TROUT -
Beekeepers,
As a reminder, the next Indy Southside Beekeepers Club meeting will be Tuesday, November 7, 2023, from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. (Please note the time for this meeting only.) Meetings are held at the Franklin Township Civic League office, 8822 Southeastern Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46239. At this meeting we will be enjoying some pizza and making Candy Boards or Bricks for overwintering our hives. All are encouraged to attend, even if you don't need to make any. Even if you don't have any bees yet. It is a great networking opportunity to help out, know each other better and to learn more about beekeeping. Also, we'll be having pizza. Bring your own beverage.
Please RSVP by November 2nd so I know how many pizzas to order. If you're not sure by then but can, come anyway.
Beekeepers of Indiana has donated 250# of sugar to local clubs. Tim Caldwell picked it up for us and Steve Pryor has stored it. We can use this up at the meeting.

You will need to build your boxes and bring them to the meeting. Here are some of links for information on how to build. Or you can buy frames from many beekeeping supply outlets.
Southeastern Indiana Beekeepers Association website has lots of good resources. Southeastern Indiana Beekeepers Association | (indianahoney.org) If you need to make the boxes for candy boards check their website. Search for "candy board" | Southeastern Indiana Beekeepers Association (indianahoney.org)
For Candy Board making you need sugar, vinegar (or Honey B Healthy), sugar board frames, and equipment. Some like to put tissue paper down and pack the sugar on top of it. (It's a little less messy in your car on the way home. Bring your buckets, tarps, big mixing spoons, a block of wood or other tool to tamp/pack down the sugar into the frame or mold, measuring cups and spoons. If you don't have it, someone else will and we can share. Here’s a recipe so you can gauge how much sugar to buy, you can figure about 8-12# of sugar for each candy board you make.

Recipe for the White Sugar Bricks
8 lbs. - 1 1/2 cups (12 oz.) water + 1 Tbsp. (Honey Bee Healthy or vinegar)
10 lbs. - 15 oz. water + 2 Tbsp. (HBH or Vinegar)
12 lbs. - 18 oz. water + 2 Tbsp. (HBH or Vinegar)
14 lbs. - 21 oz. water + 3 Tbsp. (HBH or Vinegar)
Another basic recipe is 10# sugar + 10 ounces water + 1 T Honey-B-Healthy or white vinegar. This one is harder to mix but seems to dry hard faster. If you have another recipe, please do a reply all and share with the Club members.
Make sure that you bring supplies and tools to the meeting.
Several people have RSVP'd for pizza, if you haven't, please let me know by Nov. 2nd so that we know how many to get. Don't forget to bring your own beverage. See you on November 7th.
This is the last 2023 Club meeting. Watch for an email with 2024 dates and check out the Indy Southside Beekeepers Club Facebook page. If there is another Beekeeper website or Facebook page you like, please let us all know.
thanks, Vickie
