Indy Southside Beekeepers - no meeting tomorrow night, it's Jan. 9th

The next Indy Southside Beekeepers Club meeting will be Tuesday, January 9, 2024, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Meetings are held at the Franklin Township Civic League office, 8822 Southeastern Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46239.

Please send your suggestions for this month’s agenda to me by Saturday January 6, 2024.

If you or a friend is interested, the Beekeepers of Indiana (BoI) Jump Starter program is a partnership between the state association and the local clubs. The goal is to assist the local clubs with getting more people involved in beekeeping. This is for new beekeepers that don't have hives or bees yet.

The state association provides the hive and tools while the local club provides a mentor, money towards the protective gear and the bees. If you or a friend are interested, the deadline for submitting an application to the Indy Southside Beekeepers Club is January 9^th at the Club meeting. Please check the Beekeepers of Indiana website for all of the details, requirements and application. You must join BoI, complete the application and bring it to the meeting on the 9th. Bring proof of BoI membership, too. Keep in mind that you will be required to write 3-4 articles about your experience and submit photos as a requirement. This Month's Agenda includes:

1. Club Business -

> Treasurer's Report

> Club purchases - we've talked about a capping tote, refractometer, strainers, heated knife, decapping roller, etc. Please bring recommendations of any of these items that you have that you like, works well, etc. (Except the refractometer, I think we've figured that one out.) We would like to order for free shipping and pickup at Bee School.

> Beekeepers of Indiana (BoI) Jump Starter program candidates.

2. Discussion -

>Nuc purchased last year from another veteran beekeeper. Some frames have rotted and they broke during inspection. How soon in the spring should I replace those broken frames? Should I leave the broken frames out for the bees to feed on the left-over honey?

>When the nuc was placed on my new hive box last summer, there was some wax left over inside the nuc box. It later grew mold. Can I still recover the moldy wax to make candles?

>Last year I planted clover towards the back of my hives and around 30 yards from the hives to assist the bees. I even stopped mowing around that area to allow the bees to get acclimated to that source of nutrients. However, I did not see many bees grazing on the clover when I moved nearby. Should I move the bees closer to the clover

>In a brand-new colony, I placed the suppers on top of the brood frames once the bee population increased. However, I did not get any drawn out comb in the supers, none. Should I put the suppers on this year as early as April no matter whether I see its population flourishing, or not? What else can I do to the frames to encourage the bees to draw them out?

> I would like to collect pollen from my bees this year. There are a few set ups in the market to do so. What set ups do you recommend? What month should I be able to catch most of the pollen without jeopardizing the health of the hive? What is the clue to know that I will not be robbing the bees from their nutrients?
