May Indy Southside Beekeepers Club meeting reminder May 7, 2024 - check it all out

The next Indy Southside Beekeepers Club meeting will be Tuesday, May 7, 2024 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Meetings are held at the Franklin Township Civic League office, 8822 Southeastern Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46239. If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions for this month’s agenda to me by Saturday May 4, 2024.
This month I had a couple of requests. One is to address swarm catching. We hit on it last month, but the member would like to see what tools you take to get a swarm and how you use those tools. Bring your stuff and let's see how you do it. what do you do with the swarm when you get it back to your bee yard. Do you handle swarms from a swarm trap differently than one you catch from a tree?
The second request is to address how to add a package, nuc or swarm to a hive. How to prepare, what do you need to do the first week (or not do). Do you feed? Do you treat? Do you put them in a deep body or let the nuc sit in its nuc box for a couple of days? What works for Club members?
So far, in addition to these 2 topics, the April 2024 agenda includes:
  1. Treasurer's report
  2. Wanamaker Old Settler's Day Street Fair - June 30, 2024 - need 10 workers and honey sellers, (10 including honey sellers)
  3. Southeastway Park Bug Fest - August 25, 2024 – noon to five, need minimum of 8 workers. Plan 11:45a – 5:15p
  4. Indiana State Fair - will need 18-20 volunteers. 1/2 for morning shift and half for evening shift.
  5. Buy/Sell nucs - we have requests for 8 nucs. If you have some ready to sell let me know and I'll match you up with a buyer.
  6. Jump Starter Update - Kathy Tobey
We've had a request to talk about queens In June. Queen rearing, marking queens, queen markers, queen inspections (what am I looking for??), how do I know that a queen should be replaced, etc. We'd like this to have some demonstration as well as a show and tell to be very interactive. Can someone bring some drones and demonstrate marking a queen?
Also, a beekeeper has some equipment to sell (see attachment). Please contact Joe directly.

Did hive split two weeks ago. Multiple queen cells on multiple frames. 1 to 5 hives.
Original and two splits look pretty good !
