  6. Follow up from last nights Indy Southside Beekeepers Club meeting

    Vickie TROUT -
    Hello Beekeepers!
Thanks to everyone who attended our meeting last night. Our silent auction/drawing made $81.00! Thanks to the participants and congratulations to the lucky winners.
Daniel Karagory has our new website up and running already! He will now be known as the ISBC WebMaster. Thank you, Daniel for making this easy for everyone (especially me.) The website is https://indysouthsidebeekeepers.com. Please remember that if you do a "reply all" to one of my emails it will be posted on the website. Please do with pictures, resources, and tips/tricks for beekeeping. We would like to see picture of your spring hive activity.
We had several new people in attendance last night. Welcome. You'll be getting an email about a week before the next meeting asking for agenda items, questions, discussion topics, etc. Please feel free to send something in.
It's spring time and folks are needing nucs and others have nucs to sell. Please send me an email if you need nucs and how many or if you will have nucs and how many you anticipate selling. Since all things beekeeping are pretty fluid we won't hold you to it. When nucs become available I'll go down the list and offer to the folks needing nucs in the order I received the request. You will work directly with the seller to arrange pickup. The first one available will go to Kathleen Toby our Club's 2024 Jump Start Beekeeper and we will work on through the list. Please anticipate that it will be at least mid-April before any are available.
Jeff Abshear found the information for our State's Apiary Inspector. He is Jared Spokowsky (Nursery Inspector & Compliance Officer) - J***@d***.IN.gov. I will send him an email and invite him to a future meeting.
As a follow up to our discussion on queens, here is a chart courtesy of Eversweet Apiaries. Eversweet ApiariesProviding Raw Honey, Beekeeping Supplies, & Bee Education Since 2002.

A fuller explanation is below. Please click on the links and make some notes of what you like, what you don't like or suggestions for improvement.

    Club Website Summary:
Last month the topic of a Club website came up. Daniel Karagory spent some time thinking about how a website for the club would work, and
what that could look like and put together a demo. See the links below. The website is hosted on his website system as just a temporary
thing, but he says moving somewhere permanent will be easy.

Having a club website takes some time and effort. People expect websites to be full of accurate, up-to-date information, and that's
tricky. It takes a good writer to do updates to the website and even then, if there is a last-minute change to a meeting time updating a website isn't something to do on a phone. Plus, everybody in the club already gets updates through their emails anyways so Club members wouldn’t be checking the website. It is still important for the website to be up-to-date and keep records of all the meetings that have happened for people who need to catch up and for anybody not yet in the club.

Daniel suggests as a solution that the emails we already use be connected directly to a website. He made a special email account that can be added to the club email list and any emails sent to it will be processed, formatted, and sent directly to a website. With updates for club meeting times already sent to the mailing list, those will end up on the website automatically with no extra work. Any "reply-alls" to those emails will end up on the website as well, including any email attachments like images and documents. So, under his plan, anybody would be able to contribute to the website just by sending an email with anything you want included as a reply-all to any of the club update emails. Members will have to remember that any emails sent to that special address as a reply-all will end up being publicly posted on the website. So, be sure to not include information you don't want public -- if you do send something that you need removed, the website can be manually edited after the fact, so let somebody know quickly.

  12. Indy Southside Beekeepers Meeting Agenda for Tuesday Jan. 9th

    Vickie TROUT -
    Beekeepers,
The next Indy Southside Beekeepers Club meeting will be Tuesday, January 9, 2024, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Meetings are held at the Franklin Township Civic League office, 8822 Southeastern Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46239.
    This Month's Agenda includes:
    1. Club Business -
    > Treasurer's Report
    > Club purchases - we've talked about a capping tote, refractometer, strainers, heated knife, decapping roller, etc. Please bring recommendations of any of these items that you have that you like, works well, etc. (Except the refractometer, I think we've figured that one out.) We would like to order for free shipping and pickup at Bee School.
    > Beekeepers of Indiana (BoI) Jump Starter program candidates.
    2. Discussion -
    >Nuc purchased last year from another veteran beekeeper. Some frames have rotted and they broke during inspection. How soon in the spring should I replace those broken frames? Should I leave the broken frames out for the bees to feed on the left-over honey?
    >When the nuc was placed on my new hive box last summer, there was some wax left over inside the nuc box. It later grew mold. Can I still recover the moldy wax to make candles?
    >Last year I planted clover towards the back of my hives and around 30 yards from the hives to assist the bees. I even stopped mowing around that area to allow the bees to get acclimated to that source of nutrients. However, I did not see many bees grazing on the clover when I moved nearby. Should I move the bees closer to the clover
    >In a brand-new colony, I placed the suppers on top of the brood frames once the bee population increased. However, I did not get any drawn out comb in the supers, none. Should I put the suppers on this year as early as April no matter whether I see its population flourishing, or not? What else can I do to the frames to encourage the bees to draw them out?
    > I would like to collect pollen from my bees this year. There are a few set ups in the market to do so. What set ups do you recommend? What month should I be able to catch most of the pollen without jeopardizing the health of the hive? What is the clue to know that I will not be robbing the bees from their nutrients?

If you or a friend is interested, the Beekeepers of Indiana (BoI) Jump Starter program is a partnership between the state association and the local clubs. The goal is to assist the local clubs with getting more people involved in beekeeping. This is for new beekeepers that don't have hives or bees yet.
The state association provides the hive and tools while the local club provides a mentor, money towards the protective gear and the bees. If you or a friend are interested, the deadline for submitting an application to the Indy Southside Beekeepers Club is January 9th at the Club meeting. Please check the Beekeepers of Indiana website for all of the details, requirements and application. You must join BoI, complete the application and bring it to the meeting on the 9th. Bring proof of BoI membership, too. Keep in mind that you will be required to write 3-4 articles about your experience and submit photos as a requirement. Vickie TROUT -
Three things to follow up from this week's meeting. Thanks for everyone who came, enjoyed pizza, helped out and made a bunch of candy boards and bricks for winter insurance for our beehives. From the lost and found department - if you are missing your Blue Champion windbreaker just let me know. I also have a measuring cup that was left over.
Sally Hooks wanted to share the information below from the Purdue Extension Office. Linda Tarr is a resource who works with veterans in agriculture. As you scroll down there is a Veteran's in Farming workshop in January that includes beekeeping. If you are a veteran you might want to tap into this resource.

As we say farewell to autumn and prepare for the onset of holiday season, take time to celebrate and reap the rewards of your hard work. Many farmers are preparing their equipment and safeguarding their crops and livestock for winter weather, but it’s still a great time to purchase mushrooms, cabbage, root crops, meat and poultry, and value-added products from your local farmers. Stay updated on the latest Extension events and opportunities in your county, and keep an eye out for upcoming conferences, workshops, and programs throughout Indiana! If you have any stories, tips, or suggestions for future newsletters, please feel free to share them with us.

  15. Reminder - November 7th Indy Southside Beekeepers Club Meeting starts at 6:30......

    Vickie TROUT -
    Beekeepers,
Just a reminder, the Indy Southside Beekeepers Club meeting on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, will start at 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. (Please note the time for this meeting only.) Meetings are held at the Franklin Township Civic League office, 8822 Southeastern Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46239.
We'll have plenty of pizza so be sure to join us for the last meeting of the year and help make Candy Boards or Bricks for overwintering our hives. All are encouraged to attend, even if you don't need to make any. Even if you don't have any bees yet. It is a great networking opportunity to help out, know each other better and to learn more about beekeeping. Also, we'll be having pizza. Bring your own beverage.
Bring your candy boxes to the meeting. Steve Pryor will have the sugar donated by Beekeepers of Indiana to our club. John Parks is bringing his magic stirring wand and drill and I'll bring some vinegar, but we'll need additional supplies. For Candy Board making you need sugar, vinegar (or Honey B Healthy), sugar board frames, and equipment. Some like to put tissue paper down and pack the sugar on top of it. (It's a little less messy in your car on the way home. Bring your buckets, tarps, big mixing spoons, a block of wood or other tool to tamp/pack down the sugar into the frame or mold, measuring cups and spoons. If you don't have it, someone else will and we can share. Here’s a recipe so you can gauge how much sugar to buy, you can figure about 8-12# of sugar for each candy board you make.

Recipe for the White Sugar Bricks
    8 lbs. - 1 1/2 cups (12 oz.) water + 1 Tbsp. (Honey Bee Healthy or vinegar)
    10 lbs. - 15 oz. water + 2 Tbsp. (HBH or Vinegar)
    12 lbs. - 18 oz. water + 2 Tbsp. (HBH or Vinegar)
    14 lbs. - 21 oz. water + 3 Tbsp. (HBH or Vinegar)
Another basic recipe is 10# sugar + 10 ounces water + 1 T Honey-B-Healthy or white vinegar. This one is harder to mix but seems to dry hard faster. If you have another recipe, please do a reply all and share with the Club members.
Make sure that you bring supplies and tools to the meeting.
This is the last 2023 Club meeting. Watch for an email with 2024 dates and check out the Indy Southside Beekeepers Club Facebook page. If there is another Beekeeper website or Facebook page you like, please let us all know.
    thanks, Vickie

    Hi Vickie,
So after the meeting I did some digging and found there are different types of meters. The one I have reads specific gravity and brix. The one you had reads specific gravity, brix and moisture content. I had some Mead that I have been trying and it worked perfectly for that. The mead,,,,not so much. LOL. I am going to have to try it again. You may want to let anyone know that if they are looking to buy one to make sure it has all 3 scales before they buy one.

    Vickie TROUT -
    Beekeepers -
As Rick mentioned in our August meeting, The Greenwood Airport is having a community day on August 26th. All are welcome to attend. If you would like to set up a booth and sell honey, please contact Rick by August 11th at f***@g***.in.gov to make arrangements to sell your honey.
Even if you couldn't work the Southeastway Park Bug Fest on August 27th, it's a great day for kids. There is a carload charge but well worth it.
Also mentioned at the August, the Club now has an electric extractor for Club members' use. If you would like to use one of the Club extractors between now and Labor Day, please contact me NO LATER THAN August 17th to make arrangements. (I will be out of state for 2 1/2 weeks). If you decide after the 17th that you need it, please contact Steve Pryor at s***@g***.com.
Lastly, think about agenda items for the September meeting. Some topics suggested have been wax melting demos and mite treatment types.
    thanks, Vickie

    The Beekeepers of Indiana

    Hello Members,

Come on along, come on along, while the weather's nice and bright.

Each year The Beekeepers of Indiana have two booths at the Indiana State Fair. One booth in the Ag-Hort building has an observation hive, sells honey and hive products along with honey ice-cream and honey lemonade, shows industry videos and shares information with other fair go-ers. The other booth is in the Pioneer Village sells honey and hive products and makes candles from 100% beeswax.

The money made at these booths helps us fund our programs and the share that each local club gets helps them with their local events. If your club would like to sign up for a day, we have five days open. If you are unable to work a shift on the day your local club is working, you may volunteer on any other day.

Our volunteers have a great time and lots of fun. Shifts are 9:00 am - 2:30 pm or 2:30 - 8:00 pm. Each volunteer receives a free ticket to the fair so you can volunteer for a shift and visit the fair the rest of the day.

We are looking for assistance on the following days:

    • Sunday, July 30, 2023
    • Wednesday, August 2, 2023
    • Friday, August 4, 2023
    • Thursday, August 10, 2023
    • Sunday, August 20, 2023

If you are available and would like to volunteer for either shift, please contact me at b***@a***.com

    Regards,
    Robert Duffy, TBoI State Fair

  34. Follow up to June Bee Club Meeting + 1 reply

    Vickie TROUT -
    Beekeepers,
Thanks to everyone who has signed up for our volunteer opportunities. For Sunday, June 25th Wanamaker Old Settlers Day Street Fair we could still use a couple of people early/mid afternoon for a couple of hours to give the honey sellers a break.
For The State Fair on Wednesday, August 9th we need people to work the evening shift from 3:00 - 8:30. You get a free ticket to get into the fair and the Club pays for your parking. It's a great opportunity for new beekeepers to learn. There is always something to do in the booth - sell lemonade, ice cream or honey, run the video, stock shelves, etc. You don't have to be a bee expert to have a great time.
For the Southeastway Park Bug Fest on Sunday August 27, we need at least 4 more volunteers (6 would be better). This is a great event for families. You get in free and help at the beekeeping station and your family can take in the event for free. Club members can also sell honey here. At the station we talk about beekeeping, use lots of our educational materials and show off our bee equipment. No experience required.
    Thanks so much, Vickie

  37. Indy Southside Beekeepers Club - Volunteer Sign Up + 1 reply

    Vickie TROUT -
    Beekeepers,
We have 2 events fast approaching that the Club needs volunteer workers, plus one more on the horizon. Please put these on your calendar and let me know your availability. We will finalize volunteers for the Wanamaker Old Settler's Day Street Fair at our meeting on June 6th.
    1. We need 8-10 workers for the Wanamaker Old Settler's Day Street Fair on June 25th. Set up time is 8:30 am and it closes at 4 and take down takes about 30 minutes. You can sell honey at our booth, but you have to be present to do so. We can do shifts from 8:30 - 12:30 and noon to 4:30. If that doesn't work for you, a couple of hours in the middle of the day is very helpful so people can take a break. Please me an email and let me know when you can work.
    2. We need 20 volunteers for the Beekeepers of Indiana State Fair Booth on August 10th. You get a free ticket into the fair and the Club pays your parking. This is another great time for new beekeepers. There is always something to do in the booth, even if you aren't comfortable talking about beekeeping. Shifts are usually 8:30 - 3:00 and 2:30 - 9:00. If that doesn't work for you, let me know what does. I'll have a sign up sheet at the June meeting.
    3. It's not too early to think about the Southeastway Bug Fest on August 27th, Set up begins at noon. The event runs 1-5. You can sell your honey here if you are present. This is a big event. We need 8-10 volunteers. It is free admission for workers, you can bring your family and let them do the experience while you talk about beekeeping. Again, a great time for new beekeepers.
    Thanks, Vickie

She has lots of cone flowers, black-eyed and brown-eyed susans, Lambs ear and irises. All free to a good home. She lives "a stone's throw away" from Greenwood Park Mall at 201 Elm St, Greenwood. Hi there. I'm glad that you all could make it to the Bee Club meeting Tuesday night. I just want to check to see that I have your email addresses correct. Just respond to this message to confirm.
We are a pretty loose group. Please stay after a meeting and introduce yourself and enjoy the chats/lamenting/conversation. Beekeeping is a struggle at times so it helps to have a support group. If you haven't, check out and join our Facebook page. We don't have club dues but at each meeting we "pass the bee" for a goodwill collection. We donate this money to the Franklin Township Civic League. They allow us to use the building for free and this helps to offset their costs.
Each month I'll send out an email asking for agenda topics. PLEASE send your questions in, even if you think it's silly because you are a new beekeeper. However, you will hear lots of input from a variety of people so you can decide what's best for you. Sometimes members who have kept bees for a while face a challenge for the first time and it helps them, too. I usually send out an email with the agenda on the Sunday before the meeting. Feel free to drop me a message anytime if you need help. I'll try to match you up with another club member for the information.
Thanks and see you next month, Vickie
